Plastic Free Grocery Storage Guide: Spring Harvest Series for Herbs

Jollia FungBlog

Plastic free grocery storage guide | food connectionsAs an extension to last week’s blog, we will be showing you the best way to store your herbs properly to prolong its shelf life. We decided to create our own grocery storage guide because all the ones we found online requires the use of wasteful products like plastic bags, saran wraps, and paper towels.

Determining how to store your herbs.

Feel the leaves, is it rigid and hard or tender and soft? Hardy herbs require more moisture to maintain its freshness, whereas tender herbs like basil and cilantro will wilt when submerged in too much water. We know it gets tricky. That’s why we created this guide to help you out.

(1) Wash Your Herbs by filling your salad spinner with cold water. Swirl the herbs gently around in the water to loosen any debris. Drain the water, spin the herbs dry, lay them on a towel to blot away any excess moisture.

(2) Store Hardy Herbs by arranging them lengthwise in a single layer on a slightly damp towel, rolling them up like a jelly roll, then transfer the bundle and store in the fridge drawer.

(3) Store Tender Herbs by snipping off the bases of the stems and removing any discolored or wilted leaves. Transfer them to a large mason jar with an inch of water in the bottom. Seal the jar with the lid. Store in the refrigerator.
